As we continue to harp on the utter failure of public organizations to operate efficiently and economically we note an item of the past week. Oberlin College in Oberlin Ohio was the scene of a recent court settlement that should boil your blood. Background: In 2016 a bakery owner in Oberlin chased and caught a black Oberlin College student who had shoplifted a small item from his store. When he tried to retrieve the item two black female students attacked the storeowner. Eventually the police came and restored peace. All three students admitted their crimes (shoplifting and assault) and were processed through the court system. But a black female Dean of Students saw this as a racial issue and had signs placed all over campus and in the town wherever possible indicating that the bakery owners were racist and not to patronize their store. In 2018–with the obvious loss of business–the bakery owners sued the college and the courts–in 2022–awarded nearly $37 million in damages. The stupidity of this action by the college dean and the black female college president–who allowed this ridiculous action by the dean–speaks for itself. We’re sure the $37 million will be added to totally uninvolved students tuition bills. By the way the current tuition per year at Oberlin College is over $56,000–making it already one of the most expensive colleges you’ve never heard of. Case closed. (as a footnote, how much of current student debt is due to this kind of “management” at other institutions of higher learning?)
