The USGA and the US Pro golfer tour finals happened yesterday. Rory McElroy won millions and the FedEx Cup lived up to its exciting climax. That’s the good news. The bad news is that every non-winner yesterday is home today with a calculator and a pencil figuring their next move. Will I stay with the USGA or move to the Saudi tour (LIV)? We write this on Monday (8/29) at 1:45 PM Eastern Time and predict that many players on the US tour will declare their switch to the Saudi tour within the next week. They see the dollars available, the fewer number of events (more home time), the guaranteed (no cut) tournaments and the team play bonuses and they will conclude that money makes their decision a “no-brainer”. The only weapon the US golf tour has is the possibility that all Saudi players can be banned from major golf events like the Masters, the US Open, the PGA and the (British) Open. That hands the next step to the courts–making any prediction a (pardon the term) “crap-shoot”. Stay tuned if you like “ugly” because this is a clear fight for huge amounts of money so a “no-holds-barred” battle is the only safe forecast.
