The world is a huge distraction. We all get so tied to what we see, hear, feel, taste and touch that we lose perspective. If we step back for a moment, we need to ponder who we are, where we came from, where we are going, why we are here and how did we get here. That’s a lot for one plate so let’s only cover one overall answer to all the questions. Whatever your response to these questions the really big issue is “is there a God?” Because if there is a God–all of these questions are answered. Conversely if there is no God we have no possible way of answering ANY of these questions. The Big Bang theory, Darwin’s evolution, the Genesis account–all fail to account for the issue “does God exist?” Now you can be like some people who just don’t care whether God exists or not–we term them “agnostics”. Then we have those who say he does not exist–we term them “atheists”. Finally we have those who believe in God (or some other name for a Supreme Being) and the God-believers we term “Christians”. Let’s clear the air–as they say. We believe in the existence of God. We’re not sure about all the stories in the Bible and elsewhere about Jesus, the crucifixion, the resurrection and all the Old Testament verses. Those events may have been recorded to help us understand the roles God and human beings play in the grand scheme of things. This God-belief is rooted in simple logic. There had to be a first acorn to produce the first oak tree. There must have been some being that always existed to have caused the Big Bang; or to have created the first single cell animal that washed up on the shore, decided to grow in size, split into male-female and, over million of years, turn into us. Nothing starts itself. We are not equipped to understand how any being could have always existed. That is a mystery and requires faith. But if we do not accept that belief we cannot answer the questions we posed above. St. Thomas Aquinas, a Middle Age theologian, wrote that God exists as the “Uncaused Cause”. Our take is this: what have you got to lose if you believe in God and it turns out that there is no God? What do you have to lose if you do not believe in God and God not only exists but will judge you when you leave this planet? Might this be a good time to “play it safe”?
