Does anyone still doubt the power of social media? From damaging personal reputations, to sharing bomb building techniques to inciting civil unrest to political mayhem to spreading false COVID info, etc.—all these and more are tearing at the fabric of American society daily. Re-quoting “the pen is mightier than the sword” and handing that weapon to EVERYONE is like handing a loaded rifle to a 10 year old and tell him he’s free to shoot anyone he sees. A famous person once said “The masses are asses and we must lead them”. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and others supply—along with valid info– a ton of bad information. It shows up as riot organizations, avoidance of life-saving vaccinations, pipe bombs at the US Capitol and in thousands of other ways. So far, ex-President Trump has been banned from Twitter; Senator Rand Paul has lost his YouTube account. Imagine, two highly ranked elected officials cannot be trusted to communicate accurate, safe and timely information so much so that they are gagged!!! Now the world is questioning TikTok because of its influence on our younger generation. Several suicides have been linked to TikTok presentations. It has clearly gotten beyond the control stage. Misuse of social media is impossible to stop–partially due to tech issues, partially due to timing issues and partially due to legal issues of the First Amendment (freedom of speech). We see that the “masses are asses” and they seem to relish the thought of being led. The question is: how long will we let this cancer inflict pain on our society before we remove it? …not a popular stance to assume but we challenge you to find another solution.
