(May 31, 2021)
Last week the US Senate voted NOT to create a special commission to investigate the violent riot that happened in January—resulting in 5 deaths, 140 injuries and nearly 500 arrests. While all eyes are focused on who voted against the commission the real story is the number who voted FOR it and those who did not vote at all.
The final count is this: In the House of Representatives, 35 Republicans voted FOR it and 1 abstained. In the Senate, 9 Republicans voted FOR it and 6 abstained. In total, 51 of 267 GOP members of Congress either voted FOR the commission or wanted to hide their opinion by not voting at all. That means nearly 20% of Republicans probably felt the riot deserved to be investigated. Add to that impressive count the words of former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R- Wisconsin) and you see a trend forming. The Trump block is cracking and it’s only 2021. The continued self-imposed GOP pressure to follow the Trump lead will be disastrous. It is impossible to follow the unsteady course set by Captain Trump. This is especially true when his own legal fate is uncertain. The sun is beginning to set on the Trump mystique as the shadow of his clout pales.
