What a terrible word combination!!! But since January 6th it has become a daily conversation landscape. The fact is: domestic terrorism is a significant part of our society and it is apparently growing. Some of this growth is systemic–meaning that groups of white supremacists are recruiting new members who share their attitudes. And some of the growth comes from loners who need to make a name for themselves. Recently a USA Today article suggested that terrorists are not mentally impaired. We totally disagree with that assessment. Anyone in a civilized culture who chooses willingly to attack the Capitol and threaten to hang Mike Pence, Our VP, better be able to claim insanity. The country’s fabric requires a level of civil obedience; and bringing change to it means reasonably working within that fabric to produce a better result. In no way is a violent attack on the Federal Government a reflection of reasonability. And for those loners who just want to destroy human life–we think you can see their mental flaws. All this leads logically to more gun control and enforcement. Over 90% of Americans want more restrictions but only 50% of our elected officials support them. Enter the National Rifle Association and its deep pockets. The expression “he who pays the piper picks the tune” is a no-brainer here. Is it government “of the people, for the people and by the people” if our elected officials don’t vote as 90% of their voter base want them to vote? Tell your Congressperson or be silently complicit in the next massacre.
