Catholics have a new leader. Pope Leo XIV is the first American Pope and he seems to have hit the ground running. He’s outspoken in the political realm and–because he’s American–knows firsthand what the White House crew is capable of. He’s already expressed his feelings about the treatment of immigrants. It’s only a matter of time before he offers his view on abortion, honesty, ethical conduct and the like. All these opinions will no doubt sting the White House. First, because Pope Leo is an American citizen and he understands the plight of the poor he will speak from a solid knowledge base that will resonate with the average American (think “voter”). Second, because he is a resident of the Vatican, he is probably beyond the reach of Trump in every way. He can’t be harmed physically, economically, emotionally or legally. We see a softened “bully pulpit” to be used frequently by Pope Leo. We hope that he will use his authority and visibility to show how a corrupt leader is dangerous and what we should do to oppose his actions. We’re not suggesting violence–that’s not the Pope’s way. But a clear message to the 75 million American Catholics (aka “voters”) can be an extremely powerful force at the ballot box. May Pope Leo offer his strong voice and influence to the benefit of his homeland.
