- Trump has said “it’s easy to win a trade war with China”. And now he’s talking about a 60% tariff on all Chinese imports and 20% on both Mexican and Canadian imports. FYI, China represents 26% of all US imports; Mexico is 13% of all imports and Canada is 10% of all imports. And those countries have already responded that a retaliatory import may be imposed on imports from the US. Apart from the inflation cost implications–which seem obvious to everyone but Trump–China is the source of 82% of our lithium now and probably would be for the next several years. And if China invades Taiwan where 75% of our microchips are made we face the possibility of major production shortages of many essential items. Still think we can easily win a trade war with China???
- The gender dysphoria issue is a growing sore on the American society. Gender identity and perceived mistakes at birth in the sex of a newborn that result in mental anguish and stress later in life need to be recognized. At the risk of making enemies, “anothersview” would like to remind its readers that “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” are written into our national DNA. That said, the devil is in the details. Here’s a flash for you–men and women are different. But so are children and adults. So, dipping our blog toes in the water, we suggest that all decisions be made on this subject with a focus on helping the individual to become their best self. And the first comment is: children cannot decide that they are sexually mis-classified. Later in life (age??) they may choose to switch genders but only after they understand more about what their decision means. And as to sporting activities, boys are stronger than girls USUALLY so a born male cannot be allowed to participate in women’s sports at any level. It’s unfair to the female born sport competitors. As to bathroom facilities, use the door that matches your birth ID until you reach the adult age and have the proper procedure. Medical plans should cover mental health care at all ages for individuals who think they suffer from gender dysphoria just as any other emotional stressor. If society approaches the issue with a sincere effort to help people find their true self and those individuals know that their surroundings are supportive–much can be accomplished. Let’s keep politics out of this.
- As an indicator of things to come in 2025, the Trump Administration wants to drop the car crash reporting requirement opposed by Elon Musk. Tesla has become the largest crash stat since the program was instituted under Biden’s Administration. Self-driven cars and other vehicles are part of this reporting mechanism and Tesla is front and center by far. Watch for news to see how Donald saves the day for his billionaire buddy.
- On the subject of abortion, the Texas Attorney General is suing a New York doctor because that doctor provided a Texas citizen with abortion pills using telemedicine. It’s an interesting question. Can one state sue citizens of another state for breaking its laws? Actually, in the absence of a Federal law, citizens of one state are not subject to the laws of another state. And no state can change that jurisdictional question. So this is just another example of how ridiculous Trump’s statement is that “the states are handling abortion issues very well”.
- Trump’s announcement of deporting 20 million immigrants reminded us that on December 16,1942, Heinrich Himmler, a member of Adolph Hitler’s staff, deported millions of Jews and other “undesirables” from Germany. Unfortunately the Jews went to concentration camps for extermination. Let’s hope Trump doesn’t decide it’s cheaper to find another way to get rid of 20 million people.
- For those who watch the Dow-Jones Industrial averages, you know the 9 straight losing sessions we just experienced ties a previous record that happened in February, 1974. The previous 1974 losses came right after Nixon was forced out of office and Gerald Ford replaced him. Confidence in Ford was minimal and the market reflected this volatility. Fast forward to today…Trump is a disaster waiting to happen. His policies are absurd. His candidates for Cabinet posts and advisors are seen as incompetent. And his economic plans will certainly cause loan rates to rise. The big money people see borrowing rates (think corporate bond yields) as ballooning for the next few years. While it is probably true that some folks are selling stock now to offset gains on their tax returns–there is a much speculation among pension fund investment managers, endowment fund advisors, wealthy individuals and insurance companies with large financial reserves that interest-paying securities are “where it’s at” in the Trump economy.
- Apparently, TIKTOK is very popular in the US. Under Biden a concern was raised that it–being owned by a Chinese company–might be gathering info on users of the platform. So it was decided that TIKTOK would be banned in the US unless an American company could buy and control what US citizens provided as info. Now the US Supreme Court (as corrupt as it is) is considering whether that requirement is valid. Our guess: with as much money as TIKTOK receives from Americans and as corruptible as our Supreme Court is, everybody involved will get a cut of whatever is decided. Stay tuned…this should be interesting.
- So Fani Willis has been dismissed from the election interference case in Georgia because of her romantic involvement with one of her prosecutor assistants. What sense does that make? How would Ms. Willis be affected in her pursuit of justice because of her bed-mate? How does their relationship which began before the incident in question have any bearing on finding the truth? Answer: it only has a bearing if the criminal is a president-elect and the decision to disqualify is in the hands of a GOP-dominated board with DELAY on its agenda. In other words, the “fix” is in and–even though the charges stand–he won’t be processed any further until after his presidency term ends—MAYBE.
