I cannot look at Donald Trump as he comments on the Springfield, Ohio pet-eating fiasco without picturing Dickie Smothers. I can see Tom Smothers patiently standing by until Dickie runs out of gas–like he always does– and then tearing Dickie apart. It was all so funny when they did it. But not so funny when a presidential candidate does it. It’s not only sad–it’s scary. But for JD Vance to back it up–as the elected representative for that county–instead of trying to validate the source…well that’s a real eye-opener. Did they not see the potential for mayhem? did they not realize the potential harm to both the community and the Haitian people? Now, as time has passed, both Trump and Vance have doubled down and even joked about it. Trump sent Vivek Ramaswamy into a town hall meeting in Springfield and he made it worse by trying to validate a total lie. How far will the GOP ticket push this ridiculous story before admitting their mistake? Maybe that’s too much to hope for. We know it took 3+ years for Trump to whisper what everyone knew in late 2020–he had lost the election. You can ignore facts but you can’t change them. And that is what this is all about. The voters will decide. It reminds us of the old saying ” a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still”–meaning people believe what they choose to believe. A lot of that has been happening over the past 4 years. You can’t live in a make-believe world beyond the age of 4 or 5. That’s the age where we begin to realize that fairy tales are not fact. Maybe someone should tell the GOP.
