Occasionally a news headline fails to catch the attention it deserves. Last week such a moment occurred and we caught it. The Catholic Church has always opposed abortion. The “Choose Life” signs in your neighbor’s yards and the religious-minded voters who support Trump for his supposed-pro-life stance have been and are proof that the GOP says it opposes abortion. As further evidence, “red” states have gone to the ends-of-the-earth extremes to criminalize abortion-seekers and any medical resource (doctor or hospital) that aids in the “commission” of an abortion. Three states, Texas, Idaho and Oklahoma actually incentivize citizens to “rat out” anyone who pursues an abortion by offering a $10,000 bounty. So it is a clear cold water slap in the face when Pope Francis refuses to endorse the candidate or the Party that says it’s “pro-life”. Millions of Catholic Americans (73+ million) can now breathe a sigh of relief. No longer will they face the dilemma of supporting a convicted felon because he’s talking “pro-life”. The Pope has said “Choose the lesser of two evils”–meaning that, despite the pro-life words of the GOP, the Pope will not support voting for Trump. Your neighbors have no doubt placed “Trump” and “Choose Life” signs in their yards out of fear that–to support Kamala Harris–is to say abortion is OK. The Pope is telling us that he cannot–in good conscience–recommend Trump so, as a Catholic, you do not need to feel guilty by supporting the “pro-choice” candidate. Imagine what a burden has been lifted from fervent Catholics–in fact, many religious minded folks–when the leader of Catholic faith cannot side with the “pro-life” candidate/Party. The Pope said “Pick the lesser of two evils” which we interpret to say “consider all the proposed policies of each candidate and vote according to your own conscience”. Remember in November.
