The Georgia school shooting this past week is yet another heart-wrenching reminder that we are unable to control the unstable elements of our society. All the lamenting and weeping over the senseless loss of life is not going to resurrect those teachers or students. And being proud of how quickly we responded is nothing to brag about. Of course we’re getting better at responding. God knows we’ve had enough practice. So let’s get down to common sense and fix this as best we can. First, this is NOT an attack on the Second Amendment. Gun owners who have legitimate reasons for owning specific types of handguns or rifles are not the focus of this discussion—so put your copies of the US Constitution away. This letter “targets” (pun intended) the ready accessibility of weapons for unstable people. We need to tighten background checks. We need to close any loophole purchases of weapons at gun shows or between private individuals. We need to REQUIRE parental responsibility for their minor children as to any illegal use of a firearm and to penalize any parent (jail and/or fines) for any crime committed by their children. The next step is to defund the National Rifle Association. The NRA has consistently donated thousands of dollars to Republican candidates who dance to their tune. It is no secret that Guns and Ammo Magazine recent rankings of “gun-friendly” states show that 19 of the most loosely regulated gun laws are “red” states. If you want to change “horses” you must get off the one who votes against gun background checks and consistently receives NRA donations. Don’t cry when your state has its next mass shooting if you voted for the candidate who may have made it possible by not doing all he/she could have to prevent it. There is no room for hypocrites in this discussion.
