The recent Supreme Court (a misnomer of gigantic proportions) ruled against a ban on bump stocks that convert firearms into weapons of mass destruction. Ask yourself: what legitimate purpose could such a weapon be used to accomplish? Rapid fire weapons can’t be used for target practice; they aren’t suitable for hunting; and as a self-defense method they are inappropriate. So then the only reason to own one is to possess the ability to kill multiple targets quickly. Exactly what kind of targets are we thinking about? And, what kind of individual will want such weapons? No, the Supreme Court has bowed again to the political interests of the pro-gun lobby–abandoning their role and their moral obligation to the American people. By allowing such weapons to be freely accessible is to become complicit in whatever harm those weapons inflict. THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE REASON TO ALLOW ANY SUCH WEAPONS IN THE HANDS OF CITIZENS. SCOTUS is supposed to interpret the Constitution in such a way as to preserve, protect and defend the rights of all citizens. How does allowing weapons of mass destruction fit into that responsibility? Tobacco companies have paid huge settlement amounts to each state for the harm caused by smoking. Drug makers and retail drug chains have been held accountable for too easy access to illicit drugs. WHY AREN’T GUN MAKERS AND GUN SELLERS HELD TO THE SAME STANDARDS? We suggest that every mass shooting be investigated and severe penalties including jail time be doled out to any gun maker or gun seller who provided the weapon without thoroughly investigating the prospective buyer BEFORE making the sale. In an era where some state governments consider any form of abortion to be murder–where is the same regard for businesses that arm nut jobs with dangerous weapons? Clearly the Supreme Court–by its politicized decision–is responsible for any crime henceforth involving the use of a bump stock. Just another example of a corrupt court created by a corrupt President.
