Remember the outburst when Arizona GOP legislators cited an 1864 Comstock law that basically outlawed abortion. Arizonans were outraged and protested. After one misstep in their statehouse, the law was repealed when two GOP members sided with the Dems and said “enough”. Note this well. It is a watershed moment. The GOP knows it has a tiger by the tail when it publicly opposes abortion. The pro-life movement is strangling the Republican Party and will continue to do so. Trump cannot say the right words to change that. Worse–he changes his tune every time he opens his mouth. One week he favors a 16 week national abortion bill; next week it’s a 15 week national bill; the following week he says he favors the states making their own rules–despite the overturns in Kentucky, Ohio, California, etc. This single issue and the 86% of us who support pro-choice on some basis will kill the GOP in November. 16 states have abortion on their ballot this year and it would not surprise us if that alone encourages a vast majority of voters to reject the GOP entirely. As long as a GOP majority in Congress is a possibility we will face the reality of abortion rights restrictions. The GOP knows this and that’s why they keep looking for some position that will resonate with voters….too late. They’ve shown their colors and tainted their viewpoint on the issue. Arizona has told us just how much fear the pro-choice movement can bring.
