For the past several months the prospect of a government shutdown has flashed before our eyes. Combined with GOP funding cut demands, immigration “reform”, aid to Ukraine and Israel, the negotiations have been brutal. Last week, in an effort to reach compromise, President Biden agreed to the GOP demands on immigration reform. The Senate seemed to buy into the agreement and was preparing to send the bill to the House of Representatives for a vote. Enter Trump. Regardless of his words, Trump is reportedly pressuring House Speaker Johnson not to bring the GOP’s own proposal to the the floor of the House for vote for PURELY POLITICAL PURPOSES. You see, Trump wants to hold immigration as the defining issue of his campaign. If Congress resolves the issue Trump has nothing to harp on for the next several months. So as it stands now the immigration situation will continue to suffer for at least the next 10 months–assuming Trump is on the ballot in November. And all those migrant people will be held in limbo without any relief. Governor Abbott of Texas will continue to bus migrants northward to Democratic mayor cities while progress is avoided. So the GOP is basically saying “no” to the plan they suggested…hypocrisy gone full circle. And as if that stupidity isn’t enough the GOP wants to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for “willful and systemic” refusal to enforce immigration laws. Secretary Mayorkas has been coordinating existing laws (many established during the Trump era) with the agreed-to terms now before Congress. He has actually done more to solve the problem than all the GOP members of Congress–and yet he’s become the focus of an impeachment. When politics impedes progress politicians need to be replaced. Remember that in November. By the way, the compromise bill that the GOP is fighting and Trump is blocking also includes funding for Ukraine and its war efforts. Trump wants Putin’s friendship and blocking the bill sends a not-so-hidden message to Putin that Trump is doing all he can to support Russia.
