With all the major headlines about the elections, two wars, domestic terrorism and other issues of the day, it’s easy to force climate change out of view. But do not rest easy–we’re still headed for the time when this beautiful planet will be uninhabitable. We’ve detailed in previous posts the tremendous loss of ice fields, the impact on the angle of the earth’s rotation, warmer temps in new places that affect crops, tourism, the economy and so on. Now we are about to experience a very rare–maybe never happened before–occurrence. There is a new ocean current coming from south of Australia pushing 30% warmer water toward the US. When coupled with the El Nino event this winter it threatens to change temp and precip numbers throughout the US. This will benefit some areas and hurt others. The point is: climate change is always happening and we need to pay attention to its potential negatives…the positives (if any) can be tolerated but floods, wildfires, droughts and excessive temps are always there as surface conditions change.
