It should be obvious to everyone by now that social media–on all its platforms–was a mistake…one of those ideas that sounded good but has turned dangerous for society. Perps include terrorists, bomb makers, political misinformation peddlers, porno sellers, human traffickers, the list goes on. What seemed like a really cool way to stay in touch with friends and family has become a tool for all kinds of ugly and dangerous people. We most recently saw this when First Amendment rights were pitted against social media use in the Supreme Court. We try so hard to protect our basic freedoms that we allow bad people to surface in ways that threaten the rights of others. Even some states now are second-guessing the role of social media. Some companies have banned its use on company time and premises. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again “the pen (like social media) is mightier than the sword”. The omnipresent and global dissemination of negative information pours gasoline on unthinking minds who spread it like wildfire. If social media cannot be contained it must be eliminated. Imagine a TV network with no constraints on who uses it or what message they convey. The potential to destroy is enormous and the destroyers are poised, ready and armed to make their moves. Combined with artificial intelligence our national election in 2024 will be chaos…totally uncontrollable. The bottom line: First Amendment rights should not allow individuals to promote actions against the good of society. Until our “leaders” realize how armed the opponents are we will suffer in many ways. Technology moves much faster than the court system so expect future failures to govern the social media world. Big money supports social media so any attempt to curtail it will be extremely difficult–but it must be done–and soon.
