The same Party that opposes the right to an abortion is the same party that consistently promotes gun laws resulting in school massacres. Does that sound like “pro-life”? The National Rifle Association has donated millions of dollars to the GOP over the years. And last year we saw over 500 massacres involving school children, supermarket shoppers, mall visitors, concert-goers and others. We also saw many states liberalize their gun laws making assault rifles and other weapons more easily accessible and free to carry. There is a bill pending in Kentucky now (HB 138) that would allow 18 year olds to carry concealed weapons into classrooms. Do you remember Columbine, Uvalde, Parkland, Sandy Hook, etc.? Many of these school massacres were committed by current or former students who became emotionally disturbed by some relatively minor growing up kind of stress. Maybe a girl friend was lost or a group of friends became distant or they received a bad grade on a term paper. The point is: emotional reactions are fairly common at high school ages and wearing a gun is too convenient a solution for a young person who fails to realize the gravity of shooting up the school over a test score. Someone somewhere needs to stop this insanity. You’d think 500+ massacres would prompt our leaders to make changes. But as long as the GOP takes their money the NRA will control the discourse. More guns are the answer? For those of you who think pouring more money into mental health resources IS the answer, consider this statement from Jonathan Metzel, Professor of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University “THERE IS NO MENTAL ILLNESS WHOSE SYMPTOM IS HURTING SOMEONE–LET ALONE SHOOTING SOMEONE ELSE.” Remember to ask the candidates about their position on gun control the next time you pledge your vote.
