In a previous blog posting we mentioned that there are three definite major threats to our world; (1) nuclear war (immediate); (2) an uncontrolled virus (probably 2 to 3 years) ; and (3) climate change (longer term). These indisputable danger signs are being ignored. The Putin Ukraine war has threatened an accidental bombing of a nuclear power plant which could wipe out major populations. And Putin has separately indicated the possible use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine. When the term “nuclear” becomes part of the daily discourse it numbs us to the reality. As to an uncontrolled virus, imagine where the planet would be today WITHOUT vaccines. Then factor in the 40% to 50% of human beings that had access to the vaccine but freely chose to risk their lives and the lives of all they came into contact with. Not good because the next virus may not have a cure as fast and the planet won’t be able to wait until the “hoaxers” become convinced that the end of the world is in sight. And finally, climate change. This is no longer a theory. The world is heating up; the ice shelf is melting; many countries are experiencing weather changes that seem permanent. What are the nations of the world doing? Has anyone moved adequately to reduce fossil fuels consumption? Are we doing enough to promote electric vehicles? Why aren’t the utility companies financially encouraging their customers to go solar/wind power? How much has our government devoted to solving the problem? Our point to all this is simple: we have become numb to the three major threats to our world. We talk a lot about the solutions but devote far fewer resources to resolve or at least minimize the effects. We live in a short term world focus. Unless the issue is right in front of us–it’s no big deal. It’s only a matter of time before we reach the point of no return on any or all of these catastrophes. We owe it to ourselves, future generations and the planet to set politics aside and make the tough decisions NOW.
