Of all the comments we’ve heard in the swirl around the January 6th Committee Hearing we wanted to report a profound quote by one of the CNN “talking heads”. To paraphrase, “I have a very good friend who is an avowed Trump supporter. She graduated from MIT and holds a very highly regarded role in a very respected corporation. She’s very intelligent by any measure. So I asked her–as objectively as I could–about her support of Trump. I asked her several questions that I believed would prove Trump’s unworthiness as President and as a future candidate. She agreed with my negative statements completely. And then she said “I’d still vote for him”. I was amazed. She couldn’t elaborate on her reasoning and I found myself trying to understand her viewpoint. After much thought I concluded that in matters of the heart (as opposed to the intellect) THE FACTS DON’T MATTER. I don’t know if this is a psychologically sound conclusion but it’s the only one I could come up with.” To us this seemed like a rational answer that might explain how many people who should know better still insist on being right–at least in their own mind. Call it “insecurity” as a basis for an unwillingness to admit one’s error in judgment or an extended case of mass hysteria. Either way, there is no way of understanding the position. There’s an old saying “A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still”. Scary but part of reality whether we like it or not.
