Whether you’re building a house, operating a grocery store, waging a war or selling hot dogs out of a food truck, you know the most important priority is the supply chain. If you fail to acquire building materials, you can’t construct a house; if you lose product availability, you close the grocery store; if you run out of ammunition, you’re in deep trouble. And if you’re a political party and you lose the confidence of your voting base, you become just a noisy nuisance that no one takes seriously. And so we come to the point.
Republicans–in the person of Mitch McConnell, have taken the position that they will oppose ANY measures supported by the Democratic Party. This includes a Stimulus Bill that will feed millions and avoid homelessness for millions by paying rent money. Now they oppose an Infrastructure Bill to fix a multitude of problems (the GOP favored it for years under Trump–but now it’s too expensive). The telling statistic is that almost all Democratic voters and a majority of Republican voters support those agendas. With the passage of the new voter law in Georgia and its subsequent blowback, the GOP is further distancing itself from the large and growing will of the majority of American voters. Republican voters are seeing their elected officials separating from what the voters themselves want. And so we have witnessed the slow but steady creation of the Republican slippery slope. This will clearly end in disaster unless the Republican Party can find a way to course correct and compromise for the sake of progress.
CONCLUSION: American democracy is founded on the idea of checks and balances and compromise among intelligent and prudent elected officials. When and if any of that foundation cracks it should be seen as a serious flaw to be corrected immediately. A house divided against itself cannot stand. We need both parties to recognize the value of compromise, seek common ground and bring about progress in a positive timely manner. The alternative is what we have now and will continue to have until we are again a two party system that embraces the spirit of the US Constitution. …government of the people, by the people and for the people. And “promote the general welfare of all citizens”.
