The governing relationship between the Federal system and states rights is essential to our democracy. But a series of events over the last few years has sorely tested that smoothness. Most recently the State of Georgia enacted a new voter law aimed at restricting voter access. Those who favor the law defend its detractors by saying “this is just the liberal press siding with the Democrats”, it is apparent that Georgia is attempting to “fix” a voting system THAT ISN’T BROKEN. In response to the Trump claim that the election was stolen, the faithful (but corrupt) Governor is simply trying to “kiss up” to what he thinks is the will of the Republican Party—namely Trump. History tells us that such an act by the State of South Carolina in 1861 was simply an attempt to “kiss up” to the cotton plantation owners who knew that they would be unable to make their cash crop profitable without slave labor. IN BOTH THE GEORGIA AND SOUTH CAROLINA SITUATIONS, the actions taken constituted a break with Federal guidelines and were based on unethical and immoral motives. We know how the 1861 action resulted in the Civil War. So far, the current movement has resulted in an attack on the US Capitol. Where do you think it will show up next….other state laws, another attack on Federal grounds, ?

FINAL THOUGHT: What if every state decided to change how it count votes to elect the next president? What if the electoral college were disbanded by that change? what if the Governor/state legislature could simply void any election result for any reason or no reason? How long do you think the land of Lincoln would remain a democracy?
