Fact: the less fortunate in South and Central America and Mexico will ALWAYS want the better life they believe they can have in the US. Fact: the US will never let immigrants starve to death or be homeless on its borders. Fact: the US cannot systematically process thousands of refugees constantly due to border resource limitations. Conclusion: the US needs to establish a holding zone where potential immigrants may be allowed to enter the US in some organized orderly fashion.

That said, Mexico has some skin in this game as well. If the US were to simply close its borders Mexico would be forced to allow all these people to occupy their land without any civilized resources. (no food, water, shelter, etc.)

A SOLUTION: The US and Mexico should designate a large land area–shared by each country as a holding zone/new settlement for all these refugees. The new “city” would initially be funded by both governments and food, shelter and clothing would be made available. We see many advantages to this arrangement for all concerned. The US would be able to address entry requests in an orderly manner; Mexico would be saved from trying to figure out what to do with the stranded mass of humanity; and the refugees would have the option of continuing their journey to the US–if they meet US qualifications–or remaining in the new “city”. Eventually both US and Mexican companies would be able to set up businesses and employ those who will work to earn a living for themselves and their families. It may be a requirement that any able bodied individual who will not work will be deported to his/her home country. My guess is no one will reject employment.

If this seems totally overblown, consider other territorial distinctions: The City of Berlin (44 years divided); North and South Korea; North and South Vietnam; The Dominican republic and Haiti. The new “city” on the border might be called “Hacienda”.
