Today’s ranting is all about the obscene salaries paid to professional athletes. Network advertising revenue as shared by team owners is off-the-charts. Players through their agents and unions want a piece of the pie. The result is an incredible growth in money available to owners who mindlessly and without limit compete for the best players. Just recently a baseball player with less than a full season of play experience was signed to a contract that will pay him approximately $50,000 per hour of playing time. He “earns” $12,500 every time he steps into the batters box. Every pitch thrown to him “earns” up to $2,000. As ridiculous as that sounds–remember you’re paying for this obscene result. The ad dollars that fuel this kind of extravagance come from you when you buy the products or services advertised. Next time, I’ll talk about the harm of this mess.
