May 30, was the 103rd anniversary of the dedication of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. On May 30th, 1922 a crowd was gathered to commemorate the event. It was a segregated audience that day. Think about it. That audience was present to honor the “Great Emancipator” Abraham Lincoln. And 57 years after he died–and at the dedication of his memorial–the crowd was segregated. Do you imagine Old Abe rolling over in his grave? His life was surrendered to a pro-slavery assassin in 1865 and 57 years later the American scene still demanded a segregated seating arrangement. Does anyone see the shameful irony of that scene? They were honoring a man who lived for equality and freedom among all Americans and yet segregation of attendees was required. Thank God there wasn’t a riot between the races that day. Can you imagine blacks and whites killing each other in front of the Lincoln Memorial? If we dare Fast Forward to today, are we that much different from that ominous 1922 event? A wise man once said “you can’t legislate morality”, it must come from the heart. Enough said.
