“Democracy” is defined as citizens governing their own actions and being held accountable for the results of those actions. The Founding Fathers established rule by majority as a reaction to the royal tyranny they endured in England. And for nearly 250 years America has been fortunate enough to have leaders with integrity whose sense of good versus evil, right versus wrong, and fairness versus inequality always carried the day. It’s true that even in America some members of society have fought and are still fighting for equal recognition. The American Civil War proved that eventually honest government gets the message and fair play is evident. Now we have a struggle between the two main political Parties. One is nominating a convicted felon and the other is backing an over-aged patriot. Voters are asked to make a choice in November. After watching both candidates very closely for quite a while I see no discriminating basis for supporting either candidate. And I blame both Parties for their failure to position honest and capable people who represent alternate views on the major issues of the day. We, the American voters, deserve better treatment from our elected officials. We need two serious presidential contenders whose platforms are clearly identified as to abortion, gun laws, climate change, LGBTQ+ rights, etc. Only after it is made clear where each Party stands can voters intelligently choose how they want the country to go forward—at least, for the next four years. The parties need to tee up that scenario so majority rule—the basis for ALL democracies—can be recognized as the will of the people. Unfortunately, the current situation falls far short of any semblance of democratic rule. It’s as though the politicos have abandoned their roots. I’m sure the Founding Fathers would be aghast at the political evolution after just 250 years. It’s time for both Parties to re-boot and present candidates who will rule with integrity, honesty and fair play as they support majority positions on all of today’s key issues.
