Two Kentucky State Senators are proposing that guns used in homicides be destroyed after the legal process has been completed. Up to the present, these guns had been sold at public auctions and–it is believed–they find their way back to the street where criminals re-use them. Does this seem like the old saying about “locking the barn door after the horse has already gotten out”? Why don’t these GOP folks realize that stricter gun access laws might just reduce the number of homicides by keeping more guns out of the hands of unstable Kentuckians? Granted this would probably upset the NRA and other gun lobby groups and there would undoubtedly be a Second Amendment riot but–on the plus side–they would reduce the number of innocent victims, make Kentucky streets safer for all, lessen the court docket load, improve police efficiency and generally promote much better citizen safety. But the GOP solution is to wait until after a nut job–who shouldn’t have had access to the gun in the first place–kills an innocent bystander, endangers the community, creates more police work, clogs the court system and over crowds the Kentucky prison population. Sounds about right for the GOP–doesn’t it? They can’t do it right so let’s give the impression that we are doing something positive. Would you support the destruction of an AK 47 after an unstable person massacres 20 kids in their school rooms? Would destroying that weapon bring those kids back to life? On the other hand, if we prevented or at least made it difficult for that shooter to get his mitts on the weapon of mass destruction–just maybe those 20 kids would still be alive. Think about it–is it better to keep the NRA happy and the GOP official in office or is it more desirable to have those 20 kids live? You get that choice when you vote next November.
