OK, we have two opposing factions dealing with a woman’s right to control her own body. You’ve heard all the “talking heads” on Fox, MSNBC, CNN and other news sources report the evolving scenario. But let’s look behind the headlines for a moment to examine the reasoning for each side of the debate. The “pro-choice” group believe that a woman’s right to an abortion is a health issue that only she and her doctor can decide. If the fetus is threatened during its growth inside the womb and the OB-GYN suggests that a health issue is a danger to the mother or the child the pro-choice faction believes that an abortion may be justified. Then there is also the case of rape or incest that many believe should allow for the possibility of an abortion. It should be noted that the pro-choice side wants only to preserve the option of abortion–NOT TO DEMAND AN ABORTION. In contrast the “pro-life” group opposes allowing the abortion option. Depending on the state law and the GOP politico, abortion is to be outlawed after 6 weeks to 20 weeks gestation. The question here is “why does the GOP take this position?” It can’t be the religious argument that God creates life and therefore it is sacred. If that were the GOP reasoning basis, abortion would not be permissible at 6 weeks or 20 weeks. If the God element is the basis for the GOP they could not allow abortion at any time or under any circumstances. So what is their rationale? Is it simply to appeal to the religious element of voters? Is their support only to win votes? (A distraction: if this is the case, isn’t it kind of like Fox News reporting what their viewers want to hear even if they don’t believe it themselves?) A historical note is called for: Adolph Hitler was pro-life. He wanted German women to produce as many Nazi soldiers as possible to maintain his 1,000 year government structure. Our point: it’s possible to appear to be pro-life for less-than honorable reasons. Does this explain the GOP extremism?
