• Higher education is at it again. Texas A & M hired Jimbo Fisher as their football coach and gave him a $95 million guaranteed 10 year contract. So far the “Aggies”, as they are called, have won 4 games and lost 7. Even their last win was a disappointment. They were favored to win by over 33 points and won by only 17. We guess the added tuition and fee costs will get noticed but you can bet that the University Administrators and Board of Overseers (or whatever they’re called) won’t volunteer any apologies. After all, the wealthy make those decisions and the less wealthy non-athlete student base just takes out more debt to pay for their mistakes. It’s ironic that the Student Loan Forgiveness Plan put forth by the Biden Administration has been shut down by wealthy judges acting in concert with GOP clout to keep the Dems from gaining more voter base. As the world turns….
  • Let’s talk World Cup Soccer. Qatar is the least likely venue to hold a world cup. They have inadequate facilities, an abhorrent human rights record, ridiculous laws that result in severe punishments, and, most importantly, THEY BANNED BEER. Add to all those “bumps in the road” the outrageous difference between the male and female total purses (the $$$ they could win)–but it illustrates what we’ve been saying. The men’s total purse is $442 million with the winner’s share pegged at $42 million. The women’s total purse is $42 million and $4 million will go to the winner. FYI, the $$$ difference is strictly a reflection of advertising money. The ad money believes that about 10 times as many viewers will watch the men as will watch the women. Even if they’re right, that big a difference has an odor that will follow soccer for a long time. In summary, Qatar has blended the unequality (if that’s word) of reward with its own human rights disgraces in an unqualified environment–AND DON’T FORGET–NO BEER!!! We think this shows that corruption isn’t only a political method of operating. Will you watch?
  • Major League Baseball does it again. This week Robert Suarez of the San Diego Padres signed a 5 year $46 million contract. He’s a relief pitcher and this last season he appeared in 45 games–pitching 46 innings. We thought it would be eye-opening to calculate what that new contract works out to on an hourly rate basis. So here’s the math. $46 million divided by 5 years equals $9.2 million/year. $9.2 million divided by 46 innings equals $200,000/inning pitched. IF an inning takes 10 minutes, Mr. Suarez will earn approximately $ 1.2 million/hour. We realize that he will spend more than just his game time on-the-job but $1.2 million/hour is still beyond our sense of understanding. Yes, if the Padres didn’t pay him, some other team would; but that just shows how pathetic this whole situation has become. It doesn’t justify the fact that exorbitant salaries are taking the game away from the average fan. Compare that to the average teacher salary of $20 to $25/hour. Does capitalism work?
