Let’s do a “big picture” take on Greenland and Panama. Why did Trump mention both in almost the same breath? Setting the scene…There are two routes for European nations to transport their export items to the Far East (China, Japan, etc.). One route is the traditional Panama Canal and the second route is through the northern shipping lanes opened up by the arctic circle–near Greenland. Now, if you wanted to disrupt and control the European Common Market, closing both of these routes would reduce Europe’s output by about 20%. If you added in the Russia decision to withhold natural gas for energy, heating and industrial manufacturing needs it is conceivable that Europe would fold under the Putin blanket. Add in the threat to withdraw from NATO and you have a pretty defenseless major economic player that Putin would relish adding to his control. Far fetched? Maybe…until it happens. If you disagree with this assessment, ask yourself why Trump would want Greenland. And the Panama Canal has been part of US shipping plans for years. Taking over would force us to pay the operating cost. We believe that his mention of Canada and Mexico are just distractions from his serious plan to isolate Europe for Putin and enlist Putin’s aid for this hemisphere. It’s the only way two dictators can co-exist without getting in each other’s way.
