As we post this it has just been announced that a cease-fire and hostage release has been negotiated. Despite months of behind-the-scenes diplomacy by the Biden admin and others, Donald Trump is accepting full credit for his influence. Of course, there is nothing to prove either Israel or HAMAS reacted to Trump’s threats but that kind of detail is never relevant to someone who lives in fantasyland. As they say “the devil is in the details” and that’s where we will see how the Trump team handles the completion of the peace agreement. We can say that threats won’t work in this case because we don’t control either Israel or HAMAS. Trump may bluster but we doubt anyone–including Marc Rubio as the apparent incoming Secretary of State–will succeed in tooling the basic words into a workable, long term pact. We hope we’re wrong and that talking replaces shooting. Watch Trump as the peace accord plays out. If it looks like trouble, he’ll look for scapegoats. Our guess is he’ll probably blame Joe Biden for waiting so long to force two warring groups 8,000 miles away to lay down their arms and set aside many years of hate. Of course, if Trump can spin it properly, he’ll take full credit for any spun success.
