Of all the major issues facing us the Not-so-Supreme Court has chosen to address the issue of a high school football coach who prays on the field after games. He doesn’t ask his players to join him; he probably thanks God for the safety of his players. But some people are concerned that his actions will pressure youngsters into accepting religion. How ridiculous is that? Do we think “In God We Trust” on every US coin encourages attendance at Mass? Are we worried that every witness in every trial in America is required to swear that they are telling the truth on the Holy Bible? Will that cause a widespread faith pandemic? What about the scriptural verses etched into the outside walls of dozens of courthouses across our land? Why aren’t we concerned that such expressions violate the US Constitutional guarantee of separation of church and state? Should we tear down those vile billboards so that no one accidentally starts believing in God? The separation principle was intended to prevent religious leaders from ruling absolutely as was the case with 1770’s England. The voluntary action of an individual who is not harming anyone else and simply exercising his legal right to free speech should NEVER be threatened. Maybe we need more God recognition; it seems like ethical codes need some form of societal anchor. This case is not worthy of the time of the highest court in the land. The tragedy is that they don’t realize that.
