Our culture has witnessed a most disturbing growth of violence over the years. But that growth has been exaggerated in the last few years by the unrestrained and unprincipled acceptance of TV mayhem, video game sales and the general loss of respect for human life they promote. The use of “gutter talk” on TV during what was called the “family time slot”, the graphic detailed multiple murders in cold blood on the most watched programs, the video game “targeting” kills—all of these “non-events” are having an ingrained negative impact on adults and–most alarming–on the young in this generation. Money buys it because ad sponsors pay more when more and more viewers are counted. It’s a vicious cycle…the more viewers the more money the more violence and sexual content—all in plain view. A new series is now being advertised on a cable network using the “F” word in its suggestive title. Is that where we’re headed? As long as we encourage violence and accept its disrespect for human life we will see the mass shootings headlines on a daily basis. Americans need to realize that displayed violence and a reluctance to restrict weapons of mass destruction are the perfect recipe for continued tragedies. We don’t want to hear that first responders answered the call in less than 5 minutes. The multiple deaths that happened BEFORE the responders arrived will not be resurrected and their families will not care about the speedy response. Remedy for mass murder is not timely response—it’s prevention. And we’re well beyond the time of talking about it—it’s time to do something about it.
