Can you imagine a peace conference that excludes the leader of the country where the war is being waged? No, neither can we. So what is this proposed Alaska meeting all about…well, let’s speculate. (1) Trump wants desperately to distract from the Epstein controversy so a meeting with Putin might help. (2) Trump wants minerals from the Ukraine but Putin sees no reason to give them up so Trump wants to tell Putin that “burdensome” sanctions will be placed unless Putin gives Trump mineral rights. As you can see, neither of these possibilities require Zelenskyy to attend. In fact, the land swap mentioned by Trump would be another reason for Zelenskyy not to attend. But the bottom line: the Alaska meeting may not happen at all because Putin knows what Trump wants and what he threatens to do so why–if you’re Putin–go? We said over a year ago that there is one simple and immediate way to end the Russian attack. The free world leaders should announce that–unless Russia stops the war and returns all of Ukraine to the Ukrainians–all oligarch assets will be auctioned off and the proceeds will be given to Ukraine to support the war effort. Again, a simple but impactful strategy that is easily and quickly do-able.
