It’s time for a sports roundup from anothersview. Over the past couple of weeks we’ve seen a number of interesting occurrences and we can now speculate on some of the comments we’ve made in prior posts to this blog.

  • THE TENNIS WORLD– last week the Wimbledon professional tennis players tournament was held in jolly old England. While the winners were somewhat predictable, no unbelievable winners emerged. Worth noting is the early exit of Coco Gauff who was the American woman’s hope to maybe win it all. Also of note was a wardrobe malfunction where a player’s earring became entangled with her shirt causing her to lose a point. This is an exciting tournament each year and one that has a very faithful world wide following.
  • GOLF COMPARISON– the American professional golfers association and the Saudi tour–also called the Liv tour–continue to knock heads over control of future of professional golf on the planet. Last week is an example of the disparity between the two. The American and British golfers association actually conducted 2 tournaments. One tournament was held in Scotland call the Genesis Open and the other tournament was held in Kentucky. The combined purses for these two American events was $2.7 million. On the Saudi tour the winner, Taylor Gooch, pocketed $4 million for his winning effort. In our judgment it is only a matter of time until more American and British professional golfers jump to the Saudi tour. The question remains: why are the Saudis interested in developing a golf industry in the desert?
  • SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP– recently FIFA, the governing body for world soccer events, conducted championship playoffs with appropriate attention from around the world. The winners provided an exciting finale and an exciting fan experience. It is noteworthy that president Trump joined into the victory celebration by wrenching the winners trophy away for the picture taking after party. He has since indicated that he might promote changing the American “soccer” term for “football” as it is called outside the US. These are the kinds of issues we want the leader of the free world to spend time on.
  • DODGER UPDATE–After buying the best players at every position the Dodgers now enjoy the second highest won-loss percentage in Major league Baseball. They are second only to the Detroit Tigers which plays in a very weak division. The bookies are right to regard the Dodgers as the predictable 2025 World Champs–it’s just a matter of time. Rob Manfred, Commissioner of MLB, why aren’t you doing your job?
