- Recently Walgreen’s was forced to pay millions of dollars as a fine for dispensing opioids indiscriminately. This is a travesty and a further testament to the ineptness of our government. The legal theory was that Walgreen’s should have more closely monitored the prescriptions it filled for controlled substances. Ask yourself: “how was a retail pharmacy expected to deny filling prescriptions when presented on a doctors’ orders to customers who apparently need that medication”? Walgreen’s is in a highly competitive business and offending customers is not a good idea. And by the way, are gun store owners held accountable when the guns they sell are used in mass shootings? NO.
- This is an example of really bad timing. The suspension of student loan debt repayments has been terminated–meaning that millions of students who have debt must now re-start re-paying that debt. As inflation grows, unemployment grows and millions of new graduates hit the job market in May and June these indebted young people face the budget crunch that will definitely reduce their purchasing power. That impact along with all the other tariff-induced pains are a serious drain on our economy. Would you rather have those repayment amounts in the government’s pocket or in the pockets of consumers who will support economic growth?
- A sad sign of the times occurred during the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta Georgia. An amateur who had earned his way into the field of players was seen urinating into Rae’s Creek. This happened in full view of several thousand fans. Under the rules the Masters Committee could have barred this individual from playing the rest of the tournament but they did not. In the past, ANY CRITICISM OR ABERRANT BEHAVIOR was met with a stern “zero tolerance” response. In the pats, players who complained about the course were dismissed. And in a really strange situation an announcer, Gary McCord, was barred from the course for suggesting that that the greens were so fast that they must have waxed them. Have we become so numb to the “repulsive” that nothing offends us? Is urinating in front of thousands of people on TV no big deal? What does that say about our society and its direction?
- Another sad reflection (sorry about that) is the absolution of Mayor Eric Adams from all bribery and related charges because he agreed to support Trump’s deportation plan for New York City. Several prosecutors have fled the scene because they want no part in the injustice of dropping these charges. Trump has traded one crime for another. And that’s what he calls “transactional”. Reasonable people would see that as two criminal acts perpetrated by two criminals. Let’s not forget: Adams is still in office and could still be gaming the system; and, Trump again sets a totally unethical standard that says “I’ll use any power I have to get what I want”.
- We’re sorry but the list goes on…George Santos, the completely fictional character who lied about everything to get elected, finally got his just desserts last week. He has been sentenced to 7 years for his overwhelming fraud. Our question: the GOP members of Congress commit the same frauds against the American people daily with their gutless support of a childishly incompetent president. Why aren’t the voters holding them as accountable as George Santos?
- And the latest Trump silliness… Major League Baseball Commissioner Bob Manfred asked Trump if he was allowed to consider the case of Pete Rose for potential Hall of Fame membership. Trump gave his OK. Do you wonder why Manfred needed to ask permission? Do you see the absurdity of the President of the United States even weighing in on the matter? Thousands of hours have been spent investigating the Pete Rose betting saga and judgements were made based on intimate and detailed knowledge of Pete’s transgressions. And–after all these years–the President of the United States might have the final say. Is this a potential vote-getter or does Trump just like to waste taxpayer time and money on none-of-his-business topics? This is the same man who has his finger on the nuclear button. SCARY!!!!
