The election should have resolved the fear that pregnant women would die because their doctors were legally prevented from abortion care. But then Trump won. Now, as it stands, a number of “red” states have seen judges strike down or otherwise liberalize strict abortion bans. But the issue has been avoided at the national level for a while. Trump last said he favored the states to make their own rules. Despite his support for this travesty position, the states are watching their citizens die when they could be saved if the law permitted abortion in difficult pregnancies. The Pope as Head of the Roman Catholic Church could not endorse Trump for President. That alone should have told millions of Catholics something. But now we have no firm guidelines because nothing national was in the Trump platform and the states laws have, in many cases, been negated in the courts. So what’s going to happen? Are difficult pregnancies going to continue to cause a spike in pregnancy deaths? In Texas such deaths have increased 29% in the last year. We need an intelligent and consistent national law that recognizes the rights of a pregnant woman who may need an abortion to save her life and her ability to bear future children. Until that happens every pregnancy can result in unnecessary death. Is that the America we want?
