The GOP made a serious miscalculation when Trump named three liars (under oath and before Congress during their vetting process) to overturn Roe v. Wade. Trump apparently thought that the religious element among voters would serve his re-election objective. Even when Roe was destroyed by the US Supreme Court, the majority of Americans were pro-choice. But since the issue was handed to the states things have gotten much worse. The states–led by men who think the religious voters of the state are on their side–have taken anti-abortion measures way beyond reasonability. Trump, their unstable leader, keeps changing his mind on the abortion position. One week he wants to punish women who have abortions and the next week he’s in favor of a 15/16 week national ban. Then he reverts to a state decision position. In Texas, women and doctors face jail time. And a bounty is paid for Texans who “rat out” pregnant women who seek abortions. In other states, embryos are considered children. The health of the mother is subordinate to the health of the unborn. There are no exceptions for rape or incest. Current polls show that over 80% of people support the right to choose under some circumstances. But the majority of anti-abortion states simply do not allow such choices. There is no doubt that this single issue will cost Trump the election. Take it to the bank. Any woman of child-bearing age, any mother who has a daughter, any grandmother who has granddaughters, any man who wants to start a family or any man who is sympathetic to the second class treatment of women in the red states is not going to vote Republican. It’s that simple. Women like Amanda Zurowski in Texas are coming forward to tell their ugly near-death stories. And with a woman presidential candidate who can genuinely appreciate how women are being mistreated you can expect full upfront disclosure as we approach November 5th.
- As a side note, Oklahoma tried to retain Federal funds that had been awarded the state for pregnancy counseling–which, of course, would involve the provision of abortion services if the mother’s health was threatened. Joe Biden was required to ask the US Supreme Court to retrieve $4.5 million that Oklahoma refused to return. Understand, Oklahoma wanted to keep funds that they received for a program they eliminated. It took a court order from SCOTUS to force the return of those monies.
