The State of Kentucky has come full circle on gun laws. Known by the NRA as an “A” state for lax gun laws and having poured thousands of dollars of donations into GOP candidates campaigns Kentucky is imbedded in protecting gun owners from ANY rules. Last year–over the objection of Democratic Governor Andy Beshear–the Kentucky Legislature passed a law that allows teenagers to carry rifles into school classrooms. This year–maybe fearing they went too far last year–they appropriated $34.5 million to pay for School Resource Officers (off-duty and retired police officers) to staff schools. Each school will be reimbursed up to $20,000 for the staffing of a SRO staffer. So, let’s get the picture here. Kentucky lawmakers allow full gun access including the carrying of a weapon into a Kentucky classroom but they are paying for a police officer to monitor schools with taxpayer money. Wouldn’t it have more intelligent to ban guns from school grounds so teenagers (jilted by a girl friend, upset about a test grade, coming from an abusive family life, mad about sports eligibility or any other potential rage situation) aren’t allowed to bring a weapon of mass destruction into a classroom? The officers will be paid around $10/hour to oversee the safety of schools–some of which have well over 500 students. Who are we kidding? Is one retired officer being paid $10/hour able to effectively patrol a large school campus containing several hundred students? What about the taxpayers who don’t like the gun law access issues but must pay the price anyway? Let’s just hope they pay with their tax dollars ONLY!!
