All the juicy details are spilling out about our former president and his dalliances with a porn star and a former Playboy model. It’s again ironic that he’s been indicted for so many other activities that seem far more disturbing than hiding facts that might have influenced an election. So far, the State of New York is presenting a solid story backed up by witnesses and documents. Unless the jury is corrupted in some way it appears likely that Trump will be convicted. But a historical similarity occurred to us. Travel back to the 1930’s and Chicago. Al Capone, the undisputed crime king of Chicago, was literally getting away with murder–several of them. But local authorities could never convict usually because witnesses inconveniently disappeared right before the trial. But eventually Mr. Capone was charged with tax evasion. The prosecution demanded to know where Mr. Capone earned his income to support an incredibly lavish lifestyle. Mr. Capone couldn’t reveal his sources of income because all his sources were illegal activities (gambling, prostitution, numbers, extortion, etc.). So when Mr. Capone failed to provide the requested info he was jailed for tax evasion (14 years) on whatever income he in fact made. Fast forward to today and Trump. Mr. Trump faced 91 indictments for inciting an insurrection, stealing classified documents, obstructing a Federal Process, etc. But the hush money trial isn’t about those major charges. It’s about hiding less than $500,000 that he allegedly hid in his books and paid to two mistresses. Ironic, huh?
