On the heels of a Republican-Democrat bi-partisan compromise to keep the government from shutting down, Marjorie Taylor Greene–on orders from Trump–has now filed a House motion to vacate the Speakers position. Mike Johnson, the current Speaker, did the unspeakable when he allowed the government to avoid chaos–the Trump political platform–and kept our democracy solvent—for the present. And now, to compound Johnson’s transgressions, he has indicated that he will introduce some form of legislation next week to fund Ukraine aid on some level. Greene is livid. She knows Trump opposes such aid because he’s a bosom buddy to Putin. So Johnson’s suggestion that he might be open to funding Ukraine is the reason for the Greene motion to vacate. She wants Mike to think about it while he celebrates Easter. We think Mike is starting to realize that he can only stomach so much BS and unethical behavior and that–just maybe–being Speaker ain’t what it’s cracked up to be. After all, Trump and Greene represent the lowest of the low and his following their lead only serves to tarnish his reputation. Down deep, we think Mike Johnson knows the right way to proceed. Trouble is–it will cost him unless Democrats and ethical GOP members of the House step up. All the while this hangs fire, the Ukrainian people are suffering battlefield losses. Waiting until next week may be all Putin needs to take the high ground. If that happens no amount of Ukrainian aid will turn the tide against Russia. And if that happens, look for Trump and the GOP to gloat that they supported aid but it still failed and Biden is at fault. Let’s hope that Johnson pushes the aid plan quickly. Otherwise another democracy falls into the hands of a dictator and Europe plunges into a not-so-cold war with Russia on their doorstep.
