The US political scene is in turmoil. We all see legal issues, the Supreme Court impact, white supremacists lurking in the background, on-going trials of Jan 6 rioters, Trump lawyer motions forever. and just about every form of headwind as we storm into the 2024 election cycle. But we ask the question: what is really at the root of all this adversity? It can’t be policies because the GOP–while critical of Biden- hasn’t offered any alternatives. So, what’s going on? The TV talking heads analyze daily events but still seem to be missing the basic reason for continually growing dissention. We suggest the following: this is not about what different political parties think and promise. It is about who the people are and what they represent. Let’s face it…we have never gotten past racism. And now the anti-black sentiment has spread its virus to anti-Semitism, anti-gay, anti-veteran, anti-student and anti-women. We see these bigotries in every GOP statement. Think about it…anti-abortion targets pregnant women. Anti-Catholic sentiment targets Biden; anti-gay feelings create “wokeness” and book burning. The theme is constant; only the targets change. People ask why Trump is still supportable. It may be because of what he isn’t–instead of what he is. He isn’t Jewish, African-American, Catholic, gay, a woman or any other “offensive” category. The scary picture here is that the pro-Trumpers (just like Archie Bunker in the 1970’s) do not even recognize their prejudices. Until we see some logical basis for supporting a Trump candidacy we shudder to think that his support comes from the vacuum of “what he isn’t”.
