Earlier this month the voters in Kentucky produced a strange result with their choices. For those of you who don’t know, Kentucky has been a deeply “red” (GOP) state for many years. The lone exception in the Kentucky Capitol is the Governor, Andy Beshear. Mr. Beshear is a Democrat but almost all other state officials in Frankfort are Republicans. On November 7, 2023, Mr. Beshear ran on platform which visibly supported abortion. He won re-election by 6%–a bigger margin than he won by his first time around. But at the same time the voters who re-elected him on a pro-choice platform VOTED ALSO TO RETURN ALL THE PRO-LIFE GOP CANDIDATES TO FRANKFORT. Did the voters not realize that re-electing a pro-life legislature and a pro-choice Governor seemed a contradiction? Did they not think their legislature would immediately begin to chip away at the pro-choice position? In fact this chipping away process was started immediately after the election results were finalized. Are Republican voters so brainwashed that they can’t see the forest for the trees? If they want a pro-choice stance for Kentucky why elect reps who admittedly oppose and have opposed the pro-choice position? These election results–with a GOP super majority in the state legislature–will cause “unveto-able” bills to be placed on the Governor’s desk for signature. He can’t stop the legislature from voiding the pro-choice stance that the majority of voters want. How bizarre is that? The Kentucky voter base has shot itself in the foot by electing a Democrat who can’t produce the pro-choice position for which they voted him into Office.
