As the trials related to the January 6, 2021 insurrection continue a ridiculous oddity comes to mind. Under existing law an individual convicted because of actions on Jan 6 can become a candidate for a Federal position BUT CANNOT VOTE FOR HIMSELF/HERSELF. So Jacob Chansley, who was convicted and jailed as a result of his participation in the Jan 6 attack on the US Capitol, has announced his interest in becoming a candidate. This is the guy we saw wearing horns and carrying a spear as he ransacked a major symbol of our democracy. Amazing ??? And while we’re at it, our former President Trump is an even more ridiculous example of this oddity. If his fraud case in New York results in a criminal charge and he is convicted of a misdemeanor he cannot vote for himself as President. And even if he survives Federal Indictments (or pardons himself–if elected) he cannot avoid any state conviction (Georgia). As that trial progresses he could be elected President but found guilty of a felony in Georgia on the charge of election interference. If that should occur the State of Georgia would potentially jail a sitting President. Trump would not have the option of pardoning himself because this is not a Federal matter. Now everyone should understand why the “smart money” (the Koch Family) has turned its back on Trump and found another option–Nikki Haley.
