The GOP has been dysfunctional since the Trump era began. The Trump presidency was a disaster from every viewpoint. No meaningful laws were passed, job creation was minimal, the pandemic was ignored except for the constant presence of Dr. Anthony Fauci. We withdrew from the World Health Organization during the worst pandemic in history. We abandoned NATO because we didn’t think other countries were living up to their commitments. We sided with Putin against the overwhelming evidence amassed by our intelligence community on election interference. We saw ample proof of a twice impeached president who refused to provide documents and witnesses to testify under oath in cooperation with a Congressional subpoena. We watched the Supreme Court be populated with liars who perjured themselves while being vetted under oath by Congress. And since Trump’s validated election defeat in November, 2020 we have seen the aftermath of a January 6th riot at the Capitol, the theft of hundreds of classified documents, election interference in Georgia and indictments on 91 felony charges with evidence that–at least on the surface–seems totally damning. We say all this because the GOP followed Trump all these years WHEREVER HE LED THEM. The current Speaker debacle is just another symptom of the Trump mystique. Any way you see it, there are many factions in the GOP in the House of Representatives. But the overwhelming division is between the pro-Trump and the anti-Trump members. Over 100 House GOP members refused to admit that Trump lost the last election. That means despite all the court cases (many in front of GOP-appointed judges) and innumerable re-counts and audits 100 GOP members were willing to abandon the Constitutional Oath they took and follow Trump regardless of all the evidence that the election was NOT stolen. To this day those hard-liners separate from the reasonable GOP house members who KNOW they were wrong to believe “The Big Lie”. Unfortunately only a few of the reasonable GOP members will show their ethical standards by refusing to vote for any “Big Lie” Speaker candidate. But, unfortunately for the GOP, there are enough of those ethical GOP members that a majority is not attainable when a “Big Lie” person is the candidate. We see this Speaker problem as a further indication that a Party unable to govern itself cannot govern a nation. That conclusion is being reached every day by more and more voters. We see the 2024 election for this and many other reasons to be a “blue tidal wave” and a sound flushing of the GOP from the halls of Congress.
