For those readers who follow the pro golf world, the American PGA tour and the LIV tour (aka “The Saudi tour”) have tried to combine (can’t say “merge”) to resolve basically money–how much, whose, the source, the timing, etc. They have not yet tried to explain the basis for this “combination” because it’s born out of greed and that creates an unappetizing stench for all concerned–especially golf fans on whom all the decisions rest. The 2024 schedule has been released and it shows a number of venue changes. But the biggest change is, of course, the money. Prize money for the pros has nearly tripled for some events; ticket prices for on-course visitors has more than doubled with some events requiring full week ticket purchases. And naturally the networks that telecast the events will need more income from ad sponsors–leading to even more commercial interruptions during the broadcast. Because the PGA Commissioners Office failed to inform some of the players faithful to the American tour that they were about to be thrown under the bus there are hard feelings with people like Rory McElroy and others who defended the PGA right up to the day the PGA announced it was surrendering to the LIV (money) tour. Tiger Woods has now been added to the Board of Directors of the combined administration–whatever it’s called now. Tiger will replace one of the previous Board members who resigned in disgust over the capitulation of the PGA Commissioner and the general mishandling of the whole mess. We think Tiger was added for his clout value as the PGA tour tries to control 2024. Good luck with that–we all know that the deepest pockets rule. We suggest this: DO NOT WATCH ANY GOLF TOURNAMENT LIVE. RECORD ALL BROADCASTS AND PLAY THEM BACK AT YOUR CONVENIENCE. This will save you at least 50% of the time needed and allow you to focus on those special occurrences after the fact. You may even choose to watch the final round IF your favorite wins.
