Let’s start at this: every free society REQUIRES ethical conduct among its members. The freer the people–the more the demand for ethical behavior. We are not civilized if we don’t have rules of conduct that we all observe. Now look at today’s America. Read the newspaper; watch the TV “talking heads”. Just take a short drive and notice how many drivers fail to follow the rules of the road. We sometimes ignore behavior because little steps backward from the edge of ethics are almost invisible…kinda like not being able to see the hands on a clock move but knowing they do. In this case we fail to notice the loss of civilization bit-by-bit. Our calamity in America is that we pride ourselves on the amount of freedom we enjoy. But there’s a condition for that freedom. The condition is that we respect the rights of others who also have the same freedoms as we have. You can’t shout “Fire” falsely in a crowded theater because the ensuing stampede would injure or kill others–who have the same rights as you have. Be conscious of the rights of others as you go about your daily business and maybe, in return, they’ll do the same for you. Otherwise there is a sad destination for any society that abuses its freedoms. Check out history for details.
