Let’s step back a minute. We have the GOP billing itself as the “pro-life” Party. And it’s seems pretty obvious that the Dems are favoring abortion rights under some set of timing and circumstances situation. It’s easy to understand why the Dems have taken their position. They recognize the overwhelming attitude of the American people and follow the majority rule path. But what about Republicans? Their “pro-life” stance seems to have no actual rationale. Typically a pro-life position represents a religious conviction that life begins at conception. So you would expect a pro-lifer to deny abortion under almost any situation–except maybe the endangering of the mother’s health in extreme cases. But–as the GOP begins to realize that its abortion stance is suffering voter opposition suddenly Lindsey Graham suggests a national 15 week abortion ban. Question: does this mean that “pro-lifers” say it’s OK to abort a fetus in the first 15 weeks? Does that sound like a religiously strict motive? Or is it just that they (the GOP) thought they would garner more votes with a total ban and now realize that won’t work? It appears to us that the Republican Party is OK with abortion up to 15 weeks so we’d suggest that they re-name their position to “partial pro-life Party”. What do you think?
