• Why isn’t Steve Bannon in jail? He was convicted over a year ago and has filed an appeal. But he remains free in the meantime to spew his ugly rhetoric to whoever eats it up. This is the time our government should be especially conscious of riotous language and–at the very least–bar him from any and all communication platforms.
  • Social media continues to cause problems. A Mother complains about cyber bullying–and she’s not alone. It appears that young girls are especially vulnerable to hateful tweets/Facebook posts and other platform harassments. The LBGTQ community is aiming its defenses at Twitter for allowing anti-gay tweets to drive public opinion. The State of Ohio is seeking to enact legislation that would require parental consent for their kids to use some Social Media apps. And–as we’ve said before in this space–technologically nothing can be done to stop the hatred. As long as First Amendment supporters rally around Social Media platforms–even when they cause harm–we will see the erosion of quality of life for everyone. As usual, the money involved in those businesses will rule the day. The negative impact will be seen as just collateral damage.
  • Chalk up another government mismanagement tally. Recently, the Federal Government decided to change administrators for their Thrift Savings Plan (similar to a 401(k)). Unfortunately the transition was not properly handled. Federal employees who requested loans (hardship) were unable to access their accounts for up to six months. We hope whoever failed in that transition is removed from their post.
  • Canadian wildfires rage on. Americans east of the Mississippi River have seen air pollution from the smoke. New York City was in an orange fog for a few days and registered the highest unhealthy air score of any city on earth. Is this another example of drought caused by global warming? Canada has never experienced this much fire damage in all the years of recorded history. And some of these fires are expected to burn all summer.
  • Our updated review of the Top ten movie box office hits is in…six of the movies are strictly science-fiction, three are animation and one is extreme violence. If you ascribe to the theory that Hollywood makes movies that appeal to the movie-going masses…well that’s a sad commentary. Movies should entertain but when the audience appetite is special effects, cartoons and violence it is a scary thought that movie-goers are an accurate sampling of the general population. Maybe we’re wrong–let’s hope so.
  • OK, let’s talk “reparations”. There seems to be a growing movement for this generation to pay others in this generation for something neither of them was involved in. Imagine the white race in 2023 paying the black race in 2023 for something that occurred over 160 years ago. Today’s “whites” did not enslave today’s “blacks” so why is there a need for “reparations”? People make reparations to atone for their misdeeds by paying other people for harm done to them. In 2023 we don’t have that scenario. We read recently that Germany is making $1.2 billion in reparations to Holocaust survivors. To us that seems totally wrong. It is much more appropriate to concentrate on equal treatment and opportunity for all citizens than to try to establish a value for long-ago atrocities that today’s citizens were not responsible for.
