Well sports fans, it was a wilder than normal ride this year for both the Men’s and Women’s basketball college championships. In the women’s tourney a third seed, Louisiana, won the championship; and in the men’s tourney, a fourth seed, Connecticut was the winner. In NEITHER TOURNEY DID ANY OF THE NUMBER 1 SEEDS MAKE IT TO THEIR FINAL FOUR. And, if you’re counting, upsets were plentiful. In the women’s group 27% of the time the lower seeded teams won; and among the men, 29% of the games were won by lower seeded teams. The old saying “any team can beat any other team on any given night” was never truer. And with the success of teams like Florida Atlantic and Fairleigh Dickinson (who beat Purdue, a number 1 seed), the increased confidence of underdogs will fuel the faith of any team that makes it to the “big dance”. Next year’s games should be even more amazing.
