The US Senate passed the “Marriage Equality Act” this week which establishes the right of gays to marry. It is interesting to note that 10 of the 50 current GOP senators joined with the Democrats to pass the bill into law. That means 40 current GOP senators voted against or refrained from voting. These are the same individuals who for the last several months have hammered us with slogans like “Respect life” as they promote anti-abortion legislation. The same “Christians” who believe life is sacred are opposing the right of another human being to marry because they are gay. Apparently these noble pro-lifers support birthrights until the individual evidences a lifestyle that is incompatible with their own. We condemn such hypocrisy–a term we see and use too frequently in this world today. We strongly believe that the GOP hoped to win elections with their stance and that has proved disastrous for them. But–for the truly religious minded objectors to abortion–we have this angle to consider. Science will eventually prove that “gayness” occurs when DNA, genes, chromosomes or other physical attributes are born in the person. In other words, this is no more a choice than being heterosexual. People do not choose to be heterosexual or gay. They are born that way. And, as such, the real test of respecting life is a recognition that gays should have the same rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as the rest of the community (heterosexuals). Would it seem a disconnect to ban a fetus abortion but only until the child shows gay tendencies? Would the political or religious leader abandon such a child? Our take: you can’t support “pro-life” unless you are willing to accept the gay child that your “pro-life” stance produced. True Christians need to remember “God doesn’t make mistakes”.
